Bonanza the first colour western depicted the story of the Cartwrights which lived in a fictional family close to Virginia City Nevada, an actual mining boomtown, in the 1800s. The character portrayed was the youngest Cartwright son whose mother (Felicia during the pilot, and then changed later to Marie) widowed and mother who's child died of the fever (episode Marie My Love) was from French Creole descent.
